I picked up an ultrasonic cleaner and was wondering if there were any tips I should know when cleaning parts with it.

If you use one, what kind of cleaning liquid do you use?

Anything to be wary of?

STOP!

Recently on the "other site", IIRC, someone posted they put a blued 1911 into the soup and pulled it out minutes later without the blue, using what I would have thought was a safe chemical.

I have not used one of these and can't recommend a solution (pun intended) for you but wait until an expert chimes before you dip your favorite piece.

Different metals and finishes may require different chemicals.

Personally I have never found a need for this kind of hardware when it isn't that difficult to detail strip and properly lube to begin with.

I'm pretty sure, whatever liquid you do use, you don't want to keep your fingers in there during the sonic cycle... not good for the fluids in your body... I've heard.

50/50 Simple Green and water.

Dont leave aluminum, or gunsights in too long.

Use an Otis toothbrush to scrub, then dip back in the mix to rinse.

Blow dry with compressed air.

Gets the gun 90%+ clean and degreased.

Hi guys ....just saw this tread. I would suggest always using a screen basket which does not touch the sides of the ultrasonic container or glass beaker to hold your parts in. Do not let metal parts rest against the sides of the metal ultrasonic container. It is possible to blow the transducers with direct metal to metal contact if you happen to hit where the transducers are fixed to the outside of the container.

Be well- Barry

Dawn soap works just fine at around 10%. Be careful with painted sections and be very careful with night sights as they should only be in the sonics for a couple minutes at a time. Also if your cleaner doesn't have heat start out with very hot water because sonics start to work best with the liquid around 140 to 150 F. As Rick said a toothbrush works well to losen up crud and with a hot part a little compressed air wil dry it quickly. The great thing about sonics is they will clean the blind areas but they will also strip lubrication from the blind areas.

Thanks guys!

So far I have tried the Simple Green and it worked really well with just a 10% solution.

I will have to try L29 sometime.
