I am new to 1911 ownership. Picked up a Colt series 80. Are recoil buffers necessary for recreational shooting,?

No. Not absolutely necessary for any shooting.

And welcome aboard. Why not go up to the new member sub forum and post an intro.

I use them if I shoot 100 plus rounds at a time, never when I carry.
