Theres something about a well tuned Revolver thats highly satisfying. I suspect it has to do with all those pieces working fluidly together when its right.
There are a million guys out there that love to throw a spring kit in and call it done. I personally believe the springs should be factory for the most part and rarely change them much.

A true action job is squaring up,trueing, stoning and mating all the moving surfaces to achieve a fluid trigger pull. The following is a typical model 57 with honest wear and a little hamfisted removal of the sideplate with the marks to show it.

Inspect, clean, and prepare to get Stoned... (j/k)

First the Sideplate was trued. No pictures of that. Too dangerous for the unknowing. This is a hunting gun, so it gets a scope mount and smooth trigger

Stoning and trueing usually takes about 2 hours...The results are worth it.

Not too many details, but you get the idea..

Once its re assembled and tested, Ill tear it down and get a few more pictures. It also gets a Tritium front sight.

Ppppssssshhhhh. Too much work. Just pack it with valve compound and dry-fire it a few hundred times while watching reality shows and drinking mtn. dew.
Completely kidding.
I used to do a lot of this.Havent gotten any for a few years. But I will tell you I always enjoyed it and miss doing it.
Thanks for posting this up.

valve grinding compound takes too long, I fill them with 80 weight gearbox oil with a handful of 120 grit ALOX thrown in while I dry fire them! LOLOL I've always considered a revolver a bit out of my league for tuning anything more than springs and I agree they really need the factory springs, thanks the peek behind the curtain!

Always enjoyed working on the older S&W's. They respond do well to some careful tuning. I haven't done one of the new MIM guns yet.

Self taught, so I'm sure that I do things a bit different. I lightly chamfer the edges of the hammer block and wrap a flat needle file in sandpaper to deburr the hammer block slot in the side plate. It's amazing how many little burrs I've found there and how much smoother it moves after some attention. I like to get the inside of the rebound slide smooth, too. Those things are harder than woodpecker lips! Fitting a new cylinder stop is at least a half day job. So many surfaces to fit to the corresponding parts... Dang! Now I need to go find one to work on!

I do quite a bit of S&W revolver work. I often thought as George jokingly suggested to fill it with something and dry fire it 1,000 times. Only difference was that I envisioned a motorized "trigger puller" mounted on the bench.....then just ""set it and forget it".......lol

The thing I have found is the complete lack of being square. The MIM parts seem to hold up well, they just are not square.

I have found burrs to be the biggest detriment. The quality of the parts has been really good and consistant though.

Thanks for the photos. I'm currently shooting with a borrowed S&W 646 for the upcoming charity match in November. The DA trigger is excellent but it requires Federal primers. I haven't had the guts to dig into one of these much, I admit.
