hi

I have a 686 wich is like new... when shooting DA right handed the timing is ok. you hear 2 click's, hammer travels a little further and the hammer drops...

when shooting weak hand the timing is off, a few chambers wont even lock when the hammer falls.

what is the problem?

I have just bought 8 older mod 13 and 64 from a lot of 70 older police revolvers. those where the only ones where the timing was ok weak and strong handed... so it seams that it is not uncommon that they are off when shooting weakhanded.

I have some hammer and trigger shims on the way, maybe by taking out most of the play the timing weakhanded may improve?

I have noticed that the older revolvers have an extra pin on the hand, when the cilinder is locked and the trigger travels more backwards the hand is pushed back and clears the ratchets on the extractor. so the hand does not travel (or less) next to the ratchets.

Does your trigger have any side to side play? The hand is attached to the right side of the trigger so, if your trigger finger pushes the trigger to on side or the other, it might have enough effect on a marginal hand or ratchet pad to make a difference.

Actually the final carry up in a S&W revolver is accomplished by the side of the hand. Peening the hand to lengthen it will only escaberate the problem. If you know what you are doing you can peen it to thicken it a couple of thousandths. Although the real solution is to fit a slightly thicker hand.

replaced the hand with a new one (standard, not oversized) and shimmed the trigger and hammer... problem solved.

thanks!

Did the same on my M19 the other day. One of the chambers did not lock before the hammer falls. Shimming the trigger didnt help. Went through my box of S&W-parts, and found a hand that was slightly thicker, and the cylinder rotates and locks good on all chambers now.
