I was wondering if any of you guys have this book or could help me find out approximately when my S & W model 686-3 was made. Serial number is BFW-74xx. Thanks for any help.

I had posted this on the forum and got some info that seems right. I bought this revolver used in the late nineties, no box, or paperwork, looking pretty unmolested. Anyway, seems it was made around 1991 probably. I had always wondered but was too lazy or cheap to find out.

Jeff, Your 686-3 with BFW prefix came out of the factory in January of 1991.

The best book on the subject, is the Standard Catalogue of Smith & Wesson, 3rd Edition, by Jim Supica & Richard Nahas. It has an excellent section on serial numbers, and gives a very thorough history, from the first rimfires, to the latest models as of 2005-2006. Prices run from about $32 - $39.
