The way I like to adjust the over travel screw leaves no doubt. Remove the GS and MSH and flip the strut up out of the way, slip the MSH back in to hold sear spring. Now adjust the screw in until the trigger can't release the hammer, back it out until you can now swing the hammer, and feel for interference, back it out until you can no longer feel a rub when the trigger is held back, and the half cock notch doesn't rub as well. There, that's as close as it should be, and a 1/2 to 1 full turn out will be a good place to leave it. Now put a drop of Loctite #290 on the screw and forget about it. Leaving the screw very close to interference is okay, but the reset will be very short and if the trigger is light you may experience bump firing.

Some folks insist that you should throw the screw away, but that can result in the bow over traveling and pushing the disconnector into the sear spring lifting it up slightly, this can result with doubles or worse.

Please pardon the basic question....

I have a 1991 (plastic) trigger in my series 70. No O/T screw...problem? Or, rewording it, how does the factory do it so as not to have that problem w/o an O/T screw?

Much obliged.

The bow should be stopped by the grip safety notch before it can lift the sear spring. The problem is with many 1911's today the parts mix can allow over travel that can cause a problem. This is an area that simply needs to be checked.

Ideally, I want the trigger stopped just after the sear breaks, but the trigger has to continue to travel rearward after the sear breaks to allow clearance of the half cock notch. Sometimes a great deal of travel. What can be done to the notch to reduce travel after the sear breaks?
