On occasion, I've found slides that have incurred hammer wear into the disconnector slot on the underside of 1911 slides. This shows up more commonly on both the shorter guns such as Commander and Officers and the sub caliber guns including 9MM & 38 Super, due to the thicker ejectors and required thinner rail on the one side of the slot to accept the thicker part. The '80 series guns are also prone to this, as the one side of the rail is interrupted to allow for the Series '80 FP plunger. The gun will still function, but will have a noticeable stutter as the hammer rides into and out of the worn area.

This particular slide was wearing into the disconnector slot and was one of the slides Colt sold some years ago with a "Colt Competition" rollmark and was a Series '70 that was perhaps a bit soft.

The first photo shows the wear around the slot and down into it.

Photo 2 shows the first step was to clamp the slide in the vise and, using an 1/8" mill to cut down into the rail far enough forward so that the repaired area is forward of the hammer when fully to the rear. In this case, I cut forward 1.250 and removed approximately .060 of the rail removing all the existing disco cut.

Photo 3 shows a piece of pre-hardened 4140 silver soldered into the affected area.

Photo 4 shows the area after milling the new piece flush with the existing disconnector rail and blasting.

Photo 5 shows the area after a new disconnector relief cut was machined into the repaired area.

The new relief cut was made in this case with a 1" x 3/32 key cutter, which left a slight burnish on the slide underside due to the shaft touching but it dressed out. If I have another of these to do, I'll have a cutter modified with more taper to the shaft to clear.

Besides having thin disco rails next to the firing pin plunger, I've seen some Series 80 pistols with a sharp edge on the nose of the hammer that really digs into that area as the slide returns to battery. Putting a radius or (even better) a flat on the nose of the hammer also helps reduce the hammer's damage to the rail/disconnector cut.

Very nice repair Don. It's amazing what all can be accomplished with silver solder and a Dutchman

Nice! Thank you for taking the time!
I have dealt with this kind of damage on a Delta Elite where the trigger pull was getting really heavy for the customer.
I found one side of the rail folding into the disco cut.
