Hi Guys,

I used to do bullet tests but sort of slacked off on it when we lost Mr. Camp. He and I compared results (wetpack vs water) and we'd get things wrung out before publishing. I think he helped me more than I helped him.

Anyway, I needed to restock on my self-defense ammo. Finally found some Federal .45acp Classic hollowpoint. Strange that it's available when pretty much all else is out. First time I carried it in .45acp; in 9mm it's wonderful.

At the same time, I saw a box of Hornady 230grn Custom +P, one box left, at the online shop I was perusing.

I'd had Hornady TAP before, but I don't remember much about it. It didn't stand out. I usually don't shoot +P; not because it scares me or anything, but because I just never really saw the need in .45acp. I think I did carry them once, during the last ammo shortage.

So anyway, how does this stuff perform? How does it feed? From a 1911 'smith's point of view, I mean. I'm sure it's not any better or worse in terminal performance than anything else out there. My carry gun is rough externally from constant carry, but it's very much in tune and I've not found anything yet it doesn't feed. In fact, heard that PDX1 is a poor feeder, but I never experienced the first problem with it.

Just curious as to your thoughts on the Hornady stuff.

Thank you,

I ran some Hornady HP, the stuff with the polymer in the hole. No issues with it, but I think the polymer is a gimmick. Fired into some gel packs, I didn't see any expansion characteristics I'd call "special".
