OK....So AR platforms are not new to me, but I'll be darned if I have a fix that comes to mind on this one.

Grabbed my favorite CQB shorty, decided to get the cobwebs out. Trying to re-aquaint myself with the Aimpoint and shot somewhere around 40 or 50 rounds. Last 2 didn't fire. 2nd to last one, yanked the charging handle, ejected live round, chambered the next. Pulled the trigger....and click. Dumped the mag, Cleared the gun, and the bolt wouldn't go all the way home. Forward assist didn't help. Pulled the charging handle and realized the buffer was stuck back. Cannot get the bolt to close and its far enough back, I cannot disassemble it. Don't wanna remove the buttstock if I don't have to, but this is something I don't recall ever seeing.

Nope. Decided to take stock off anyways. Forgot that about the only problem could be a carrier key OR....

I had just cleaned it and forgot to orient the gas ring properly. OOPS.

Achilles' heel? This is a very valuable post Chuck. I feel better knowing my CQB doesn't rely on a rubber band. ;)

I'll stick with an 870.

You gadget fellers with yor new fangled gismos. ppppffftt! Harumph!

Well, in the interest of full disclosure, that newfangled gizmo is backed up by a double or two.....and they aint shooting shot shells.....lmao.

In my service time and civilian life, I have heard of this many times and was cautioned about it early in my career, but I have never actually seen it.
Its kinda like broken MIM parts, lotsa stories, but few examples.

I replaced the three washers, but ordered some McFarland type single strand washers just to be safe.

....and D.I.Y...notice the absence of 42 bolt on accessories and rails.......lol.

I've seen missing rings and broken rings, but I've never before seen bent and "smeared" rings. What up wid dat?

And simple is good. After lugging around around an M-4 with PEQ-2/PAQ-4, a light, and an Aimpoint or ACOG all day every day for 9 months to a year at the time, a lightweight, basic gun is mighty appealing.

BBBBill, If I was still in service, I could see it. But here in the civvy life, I don't quite comprehend the amount of stuff I see on some rifles. This one is about as short and simple as can be for everyday use.

Funny thing was, I mounted my Aimpoint micro to the rail, thought I would get an easy zero because of the low mount, and ran out of adjustment. Still had two inches to go, to get Zero, at 25. Hmmm.

Chuck-

How many rounds on those gas rings? Could they have just worn thin at the end and gotten pulled into the gap between carrier and bolt?

Curious on wear and life span of this part, I'm sure I run mine too long.

Mark, Im going to have to say well over 6 or 8,000. Pitiful attention on my part. I think your right on the wear.

This one will get one of the new lightweight barrels in a couple thousand more rounds.
