The pig skin I use I normally get it from The Leather Factory (aka Tandy Leather). I use 2 different ones in black or . These is very thin 1.5-2oz. I normally at the store so I can look at the texture real close, looking for fine holes. The contact cement when done right will seal off any pin holes. It also makes it comfortable when next to your skin. You glue the rough sides to each other using Barges Contact Cement. Apply to both surfaces let set for 5-10 min then start at on edge and roll the skin on not to trap any bubbles. Allow to set for 24hr for maximum bod strength before you you start trimming. This allows the contact cement to setup hard and makes trimming easier. Then trim, finish edge, and apply a good edge kote. This is important to seal the edges, besides makes the product look professionally finished. I punch the holes for the mounting the Hydex and belt clips after the backing is on. Since mine are 3:00 carry I mount a 1-Way snap post on the front belt clip for keys. But these mil spec snaps have gotten very expensive not counting the $200 in setting tool dies to set them. The last time I checked they were near $4 a set.

Jeez... It's official. I am a complete and utter moron... Lesson for the masses - pay attention to what happens when one insulates themself for overlong...

On a lark, I thought to enter " kydex 1911 summer special " into the Google monster. Seems I am not the only one ( and very far from it ) that has had this exact same desire. Heck. I did not even realize that Uncle Milty's SSII had become so darn popular. HAHA! Teach me not to live under a rock. ( It won't, but just reinforces why one shouldn't ) :)

Several offerings abound -

I am leaning toward ordering one of the Blade Tech Nano or Comp Tac rigs and seeing how I like it.

Will update the thread if there is interest, when it happens.

Your google foo is strong! I have read good reports on most of those builders. Be advised that at best Kydex can't be as comfortable as a well broken in leather holster. The trade off at least is the structure is very stable and reholstering is a breeze. And if it starts out well fit...that ain't gonna change.

As a result of this thread, I received a care package of leather off cuts from fellow 1911pro member sws54.
Steve is a talented saddle maker here in Virginia. After a few PMs and a generous offer of some raw materials, I got a large heavy box of chrome tanned and vegetable tanned leather. My son wanted to start a holster as a gift for a co worker and we picked out a nice piece.
After a little Kydex bending and some edge work this was the result.
Every little step of building these holsters is a learning experience. Combining an embrionic skill in Kydex work with leather is very rewarding. Thanks Steve! Your offer of help has benefitted the recipient of the holster, and my son and I got a chance to use some premium hide that we may not have found with out your gift. The box you sent will not be emptied soon. I hope the followers of the thread enjoy the update.
